The tale is not beautiful if nothing is added to it.

This playmaking lab will give MYT teens the chance to see what it’s like to write, perform, direct, compose, and design for the theater. Using global myths and folktales as a starting point, students will create short plays and monologues, incorporating a variety of performance styles from ancient times to the present; from Commedia dell’arte to contemporary musical theatre.

Folktales and myths are stories that have been adapted and handed down through time— exploring such deeply human themes as love, desire, faith, loss, and longing. Now it’s MYT’s turn to hand them down to a new generation! The class will culminate in a showcase performance, with the possibility of further script development and an MYT production.

CLIFF MAYOTTE is the director of MYT’s groundbreaking works: The Wave and In and Out of Shadows. He is currently serving as the Education Program Director for Voice of Witness, where he is co-creating a national oral history curriculum with Facing History and Ourselves. As a director, he has staged plays for such notable local theatres as Aurora Theatre Company, Shotgun Players, Marin Shakespeare Company, Rough & Tumble and The Marsh.
