A Map of Myself is a 75-minute, one-woman revolution on war, immigration, language, home, history, DNA, and everything in between. It’s a performance-based on the now 20-year-old Sara Abou Rashed’s life story combining acting, classic storytelling, and dynamic spoken-word poetry, in which she recounts her and her family’s journey of immigration from war-torn Damascus, Syria to an America that welcomed her. Sara offers a humane understanding of the immigrant experience and asks of us the most personal and yet universal of questions: How does where we come from shape us? And what does it mean to find “home”?
Sara Abou Rashed is a 20-year-old Palestinian-Syrian-American poet and speaker. She has keynoted at numerous conferences around the U.S., delivered a TEDx Talk, and was nominated for a Pushcart Prize. Sara is a junior at Denison University, where she studies Creative Writing and International Relations.
Larry Smith is the creator of Six-Word Memoir® project and bestselling book series and has been called, “on a quest to spark self-expression in everyone” by Oprah Magazine. Larry met Sara in 2015 while teaching a storytelling workshop for teens at The Thurber House in Columbus, Ohio. That night Sara shared her Six-Word Memoir, “Escaped war; war never escaped me.” Those six words became the spark for a collaboration that has become a 70-minute, one-woman show, A Map of Myself, which makes its West Coast debut at The Marsh.
Larry would like the thank Stephanie Weisman and the whole team at The Marsh, a place where he first fell in love with the one-person form in the ‘90s. Sara would like the thank her mom, Razan Oueis, and her grandmother, Miriam, who have guided her on every step of her journey.
