Artist Biography

Internationally acclaimed “Prince of Fools” Unique Derique has appeared everywhere from South Africa to South Korea, from Edinburgh to Taipei, London, Paris, Tokyo, Acapulco and Kuala Lumpur— and has shared the stage with such entertainers as Bobby McFerrin, The Temptations, Laura Nyro, Jim Nabors, Tuck and Patti, Lou Rawls, and Sammy Davis, Jr.  His television credits include appearances on It’s Showtime at the Apollo, the Disney Channel, KQED’s Spark, Univision’s Sábado Gigante Internacional, he has hosted KQED’s Emmy-winning show “Short Stories and Tall Tales,” and was recently interviewed on San Francisco’s KALW radio. Now he unveils his latest hijinks in Fool La La, his annual holiday show for all ages at The Marsh Berkeley Arts Center.

After learning Hambone body percussion and beginning his clown training at the age of 15 with Berkeley’s Circus A La Mode, Derique later joined San Francisco’s famed Pickle Family Circus and Make*A*Circus. Over the years, this multi-talented artist has nurtured and refined his skills in a range of creative pursuits including physical comedy, electronic body music, juggling, acrobatics, and unicycling, and spent several years as Program Director for Children’s Fairyland Circus Arts Camp. For the past 21 years, he’s been an artist-in-residence with the Prescott Circus Theatre in West Oakland, teaching Hambone body percussion and circus skills to new generations of performers.

When he’s not entertaining audiences as Unique Derique, Lance McGee holds an M.A. in Counseling Psychology with a concentration in Drama Therapy. His past work includes counseling youth and families as a Mental Health Clinician with Oakland’s East Bay Agency for Children, as well as working in Richmond schools with the Mindful Life Project. Additionally, he has led mindfulness training and workshops for non-profit organizations, colleges and educational systems throughout the San Francisco Bay Area. Currently, as a Wellness Consultant, he provides support to Oakland middle-school teachers teaching stress-reduction and self-care practices with a goal of improving teacher wellness and teacher-student classroom relationships.
