Job 1: House Manager
Super-fun part-time job, working in live theater in the heart of the Mission in San Francisco and Downtown Berkeley. Great extra money for weekend, evening work.
The House Manager (HM) is responsible for all aspects of the front of house operation of the theater during performances.
Candidates must agree to work at least two shifts per month.
You will be paid for two, four hour shifts to learn the job with an experienced House Manager.
Duties
- Do an audience count, update that night’s records, and submit a house manager report at the end of your shift.
- Maintain non-janitorial cleanliness of theater spaces, bathroom facilities, building façade, etc. before and after performances.
- Set-up and oversee the selling of all concessions, including requesting further inventory.
- Greet patrons, including checking names off of a door list, and selling tickets via credit card as necessary.
- Ensure the comfort and safety of all patrons before, during, and after performances.
- Manage volunteer(s).
- Make pre-show welcome announcements to our audience.
- Check that proper signage is posted.
- Coordinate with the Technician for house opening and start of show.
- Coordinate with Technician to ensure performer(s)’s needs are fulfilled.
- Ensure security of building at all times while on duty.
- Assist show Technician as needed and able.
- Host post-show receptions (rarely necessary, and always with lots of warning when we are scheduling house managers).
- Other duties as requested by supervisor.
- Lift and post signage and objects up to 10 lbs.
Time Commitment
House Managers are required to arrive 90 minutes prior to the performance start time unless otherwise instructed by a supervisor, and are paid for that time (not transit time).
Performances run anywhere from 60-120 minutes plus additional intermissions when necessary. Clean up and close up time following a performance is generally 30 minutes.
House managers work weekend evenings, typically.
Compensation
House Managers receive $80 per show (4 hour shift) and $20 an hour thereafter.

Job 2: Technician & Stage Manager (Lighting/Sound Board Operator)
Summary
The Technician/Stage Manager position is a part time position with shifts mainly on weekend evenings, and occasional availability during weekdays for load-ins and rehearsals. The Technician/Stage Manager is responsible for successful execution of all technical aspects of the performance and back of the house responsibilities.
Technical Duties
- Coordinate tech rehearsals and load-ins with the supervisor, the Operations Manager
- Participate in hang and focuses for assigned shows
- Operate sound and lighting boards
- Ensure all technical equipment is functioning properly before each performance
- Inform Operations Manager of any issues with equipment or supplies
- Ensure tech spaces are fully cleaned and ready for the next show
Stage Manager Duties
- Ensure all seating is properly set up per the audience count for each performance
- Ensure cleanliness of stage (swept and mopped) and backstage areas for performer(s)
- Maintain comfortable temperature of performance space before and during performances (i.e. cool off or heat up space as needed)
- Coordinate with the House Manager for house opening and start of show
- Communicate with performer(s) to give time leading up to show time
- With the House Manager, ensure security of building at all times while on duty
- Assist the House Manager as needed and able
- Other duties as requested by a supervisor
Time Commitment
Technicians/Stage Managers are generally required to arrive 90 minutes prior to the performance start time unless otherwise instructed by a supervisor. Performances typically run 60-120 minutes. Occasionally, performances will be followed by receptions or talk-backs. Clean-up and close-up following a performance is generally 30 minutes depending on the show and business of the House Manager’s responsibilities.
Compensation
All Technicians receive $25 per hour, with a four hour minimum for performances. Pay for technical rehearsals is $25 per hour.
