About the Show
The Captain is an adventure story that explores lineage, what is passed down and how we navigate in a starless sky.
A 20th century Sea Captain is confronted with the devastating effects of colonization on the deck of his ship The Arctic, a Nuclear Arms Technician is troubled by the sound of a young girl running and a woman surrounded by wildfire smoke, tries to find her way home.
Inspired by the final voyages of Captain Joseph Elzéar Bernier (1852-1934).
A portion of proceeds will benefit the Arctic Community Food Center: Qajuqturvik Community Food Center in Iqaluit, Nunavut
Artist Biographies
Joan Bernier is a theater maker who has performed with Berkeley Rep, Shotgun Players and Unconditional Theatre. She has written her solo show, The Captain in collaboration with David Ford/Directed by Rebecca Fisher. Joan has performed excerpts of The Captain at The Marsh “In Front of your Eyes Festival,” The Rogue (Fresno), Sunset Solos and The Montreal Fringe. Joan trained at San Francisco State, Ghost Light Theatre with Bill Peters, Berkeley Rep with Tony Taccone and The Marsh in San Francisco with David Ford.
