Developing New Performance
The Marsh reduces the distance between people who want to create, to try something new, and their actually being able to do it. —Charlie Varon (Director in Residence)
What I love to see is this spark of energy in a performer and I want to say here…here are tools. Let’s make something. We just don’t know what might happen and that’s fine. —Stephanie Weisman (Artistic Director and Founder)
The Marsh has nourished an inclusive community where both artists and audiences can branch out into new territory and explore new depths in perspective since its founding 27 years ago. At each stage of development, audiences serve as an integral part of the creative process, witnessing the magic of the artist at work. And those of us who experience the unfolding of an exceptional new piece will never forget it.
Become a part of the magic at each stage of the creative process, from youth theater performances to solo performance classes to mainstage extended runs at The Marsh.
All it takes is one idea, one character, one personal event to spark that desire to tell a story. Bay Area theater luminaries like Charlie Varon, David Ford, Ann Randolph, and Dave Dennison offer classes at The Marsh to help with everything from the development of the story, to fine-tuning the final script. Take a class with some of the most gifted directors of solo performance in the country, or come watch the progress the upcoming artists in each of these classes have made throughout the course.
Initiated in 1989, Monday Night Marsh is the seed that started the breeding ground for new performance. This program spotlights the ongoing works-in progress of emerging solo performers of all levels and ages. We feature a variety of actors, storytellers, musicians, contortionists, and playwrights. Become a part of this special program, or come support the four different performers each Monday night in San Francisco. Wonderful things can happen.
