VOX in a BOX, is an autobiographical monologue about an African
American singer’s struggle to find her voice. From opera to jazz, gospel and
spoken word, Candace Y. Johnson candidly reflects on the 20+ years it took to free her voice. Accompanied by pianist Ben Flint, Johnson engages the audience with improvised moments throughout and an opportunity for playback theater at the end. Exploring themes of cultural identity, belonging, authenticity and self-expression, this work is sure to inspire.

Artist Biography

Lyric coloratura, Candace Johnson, is a dynamic singing artist on the
voice faculty of UC Berkeley’s music department. Equally comfortable in opera, musical theater, and jazz, Johnson has performed lead roles in Howard’s End, America, Le Nozze di Figaro, The Medium, Suor Angelica, Fame, and others. She has performed at Carnegie Hall and The Manhattan Center, and is praised for her excellent vocal interpretation, fiery dramatic presence, and her ability to create spontaneous musical scenes. In unique fashion, Johnson melds her African American music heritage with her operatic training. After earning a Doctorate of Musical Arts degree from the University of Michigan, Johnson was awarded the prestigious Chancellor’s Postdoctoral Fellowship at UC Berkeley to expand her research on the life and vocal works of African American composers. Her training has been under renowned artists such as the late Shirley Verrett, George Shirley, Willis Patterson, and Olly Wilson.
