He Wants to Run

Written and Performed by David Kleinberg
Director Mark Kenward
Developed with David Ford

David hates running and dogs but ends up running with his Cloverdale neighbor’s dog for 13 years in the hills of Sonoma. It’s all about what Butler teaches David about living and dying. At one point, David says, “Hey, Butler. We’ve been running for 10 years now and we don’t have one single picture of us.” And Butler seems to say, “Dave, this relationship has never been about Instagram.”

About the Artist

David Kleinberg was a writer/editor at the San Francisco Chronicle for 34 years (14 years editor of the Sunday Datebook), then spent 10 years as a standup comedian (appearing w/Robin Williams, Richard Lewis and Dana Carvey).  “He Wants to Run” is David’s fourth solo theater work, after two successful runs at the Marsh Theater on his Vietnam war experiences – “Hey, Hey, LBJ!” about his year as an army combat correspondent in Vietnam, and “Return to the Scene of the Crime,” going back to Vietnam 50 years later to perform “LBJ” under threat of arrest from the communist government.
