Show Description

Saturday Night Live said Don was “too white.” “In Living Color” network exec said he wasn’t “black enough.” So, Don’s doing his own damn sketch variety show. An evening of irreverent sketches, edgy stand-up, short films and music.

A casting executive for “Saturday Night Live” loved Don Reed. Lorne Michaels did not. When it got down to the wire – the word got back – Don was, “too white.” Don signed contracts for “In Living Color” but a network executive blocked it all at the 11th hour, stating he was “not black enough.” But, Don who forever shunned roles that didn’t show the full scope of urban characters, never put obvious black stereotypes in any of his work. And now, after 5 award winning solo shows, a run Off-Broadway of East 14th, appearances with the Tonight Show, Netflix, Amazon Prime, NBC, comedy clubs and corporate events – Don will have the opportunity to play whatever original characters and impersonate the celebrities/public figures he chooses. Yes, his own one man sketch variety show, a hilarious hybrid of SNL, In Living Color with some of the very touching beats of The Carol Burnett Show.” Come laugh, think, laugh some more and maybe feel – just a little. And yes, you might notice a couple of characters that are “too white.”

Artist Biography

Don Reed, (HBO/Snap Judgment/CBS) was the 2016 Theatre Bay Area – WINNER – for Outstanding Solo Production East 14th and is currently Co-Producing filmmaker Robert Townsend‘s solo hit Living the Shuffle. A San Francisco Bay Area Theatre Critics Circle Nominee and NAACP Triple Nominee for Best Actor & Best Playwright, he is presently playing one of the lead roles in the Amazon Prime comedy series Bartlett which is co-financed and stars Lin Manuel Miranda (creator of the Broadway smash HAMILTON) in a recurring role.

Don has performed, written and directed for film, television and theater. A memorable performance on Townsend’s HBO Partners and Crime Special of up-and-coming comedians years ago caught the attention of some Hollywood guns and led to many recurring and guest starring roles. You may have heard his voice on Spiderman, Johnny Quest, SNL and most recently as the voice of the cat on 2 Broke Girls. Additionally, Don has written, directed, produced and starred in short films for HBO’s Def Jam. He has written and starred in work for Oprah Winfrey’s OWN and can be seen in the Netflix feature film Unleashed alongside stars from Showtime’s Shameless. Reed was the opening act/warm-up comedian for The Tonight Show with Jay Leno for over 1,000 episodes, and recently shared an excerpt story from the aforementioned East 14th – on NPR/WYNC’s Snap Judgment so compelling that it was woven into the graduate writing curriculum at American University in D.C.  See it here…“I Miss Toni”

Don asks that you support MISSSEY.org to impact the challenges of sexually exploited youth. He is also a board member of the thriving 51Oakland foundation keeping music and the arts alive in Oakland Public Schools.
