About the Benefit

Please join us for a special evening at The Marsh Berkeley Cabaret: a benefit for our own Lance McGee, also known as Unique Derique!

Audiences delight in his family-friendly performances incorporating classic physical comedy, hambone body percussion, and playful humor all around the Bay Area—including his annual live Fool La La holiday shows at The Marsh stages and streaming online, always with a message of “being in your joy” to crowds of all ages.

His alter-ego Lance McGee was part of The Marsh for quite a few years with whatever needed minor repair or a fresh coat of paint. He has been a community fixture in his many years working with under-served youth at Prescott Circus Theatre, and more recently working as a Trauma-informed Wellness Coach providing support to teachers and staff at Bay Area schools and leading workshops to organizations looking to provide support for their educators, teaching artists, and staff.

Lance’s life has always included supporting others, and now his Marsh family would like to return the favor and provide him with support that he so generously provides to others.

His brother, local artist Doran McGee (whose colorful murals adorn locations near Ashby BART station and at the former UA Movie Theater on Shattuck) lost his battle with pancreatic cancer in January; shortly after, his mother Sandra passed away from a previously undiagnosed cancer in May.

In the wake of Sandra’s passing, Lance has stepped into the role of caregiving his 93-year-old “Grandma Boots”—also known to Fool La La audiences as “Fool La La #1” in the Five Fool La La’s video. Although she is in hospice with dementia and requires constant care, she is doing well under the care of Lance and his stepfather.

Marsh family and friends are holding a fundraiser on Wednesday, September 18 at The Marsh Cabaret to help pay for his mother’s burial costs and to help offset the ongoing costs of caring for Grandma Boots.

We invite you to join us for an evening of entertainment with friends contributing music, community, and love!

UPDATE: Sadly, we’d like to let you all know that since this was published, Grandma Boots passed away peacefully in her sleep on Sunday. We thank you for the outpouring of love and support.
