About the Show

Ever wish that someone you love would change overnight? Be careful what you wish for! At 31, Steve moves back in with his parents. But when his gruff, distant dad transforms before his very eyes, Steve is in for the ride of a lifetime. “Seeing Stars” is a heartfelt and hilarious exploration of family dysfunction, mental illness, and a son’s desire to connect with his dad.


Artist Biography

Steve Budd is an actor, writer, storyteller, and award-winning solo performer living in Oakland, California. He has trained at The Marsh and with The Groundlings in L.A. Originally from the Boston area, Steve has performed with the San Francisco Playhouse, Custom Made Theatre Company, New Conservatory Theatre Center, Central Works, Impact Theatre, Marin Shakespeare Company, Wheelock Family Theater, The Theater at Monmouth, and The English Theatre Company of Israel. His solo show “What They Said About Love” ran for three months at The Marsh in 2018 and was a Theatre Bay Area Top 5 Solo Show.

June 15 – Opening Comedy with Karen Ripley & Post-show talkback with Somatic Therapist Larisa Blum and Steve Budd

KAREN RIPLEY came on to the gay comedy scene in 1977 in San Francisco. From the cover of the East Bay Express (Berkeley, Ca) with Whoopi Goldberg to Ms. Magazines top 100 Lesbian Comic 2009. 2005 SF Fringe Best Musical Comedy with Annie Larson in the original play “Show Me where it Hurts,” and 2006 Diva Fest. with “waiting for FEMA.”  Ripley has traveled all over the USA and the Caribbean. Featured in Logo’s Wisecracks episode 2. Karen played Penny the Plumber is Margo Dean’s 2022 production of “Lesbian Straights”

LARISA BLUM is a somatic therapist practicing in Berkeley with Grateful Heart Holistic Therapy Center. She graduated from the somatic psychology program at John F. Kennedy University in 2013, and focuses on relational, attachment, and childhood trauma issues. She sees adult individuals and couples to address issues such as relationship ambivalence, codependence, anxiety, depression, major life transition, PTSD, shame and low self-esteem. Working somatically, she highlights the body-mind connection and leans on the therapeutic relationship to build resilience and confidence in clients. Larisa is also a lifelong dancer, a wilderness quest guide (leading people into nature to help them regain purpose and vitality), a writer and an amateur actor.

June 29 – Talkback with President of NAMI East Bay (National Alliance on Mental Illness) Liz Rebensdorf and Steve Budd
LIZ REBENSDORF is a native Oaklander and was a psychologist in the Oakland schools for over 30 years.  When her now 52-year-old son was diagnosed with Schizophrenia at age 18, Liz became active in NAMI and has been president of NAMI East Bay for about 20 years. Based in Albany, NAMI East Bay offers weekly family support groups on Zoom and a monthly in-person group.  It also hosts monthly 4th Wednesday Zoom educational presentations, responds to phone calls and emails, participates in advocacy events, and represents the family voice on Alameda County committees.
